India’s underwater warfare capability receives a major boost as the Indian Navy moves to induct Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes for its Kalvari-class (Scorpene) submarines, with plans to also support Arihant-class SSBNs.
Under a ₹1,896 crore contract signed in December 2025 with Italy’s Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei (WASS), the Navy will acquire 48 advanced Black Shark torpedoes, ending a long-standing operational gap in submarine armament. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in April 2028 and conclude by early 2030, with full integration into the SUBTICS combat management system used by Project-75 submarines.
The Black Shark torpedo features fiber-optic guidance, advanced acoustic homing, and low-noise electric propulsion, offering a significant upgrade over legacy systems. Beyond the Kalvari fleet, these torpedoes are expected to enhance the defensive survivability of Arihant-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, serving as a reliable interim solution until indigenous heavyweight torpedoes like Takshak enter full-scale production.
As the sea-based leg of India’s nuclear triad, Arihant-class SSBNs rely primarily on SLBMs for deterrence, but modern torpedo capability is critical for protection against hostile surface ships and enemy submarines during deterrent patrols.
The induction also revives a decade-old deal stalled by external factors and aligns with India’s broader plans for Make in India, including potential local production of over 200 torpedoes to support future platforms such as Project-75I submarines and indigenous nuclear attack submarines (SSNs).
With growing security challenges in the Indo-Pacific, the Black Shark torpedo acquisition marks a pragmatic and strategic enhancement of India’s undersea combat power.
