STEP 1 - Download the required North Carolina divorce papers

STEP 2 - The person that has decided to file for divorce must fill out the following forms, make 4 copies, and submit to the North Carolina Circuit Court Clerk's Office:
Complaint for Divorce
Divorce Summons
Domestic Civil Cover Sheet
Verification
*Be sure to fill out an Assignment Card from the clerk

STEP 3 - You should have at least 1 yellow copy of the Summons that you received from the clerk, take that along with a copy of the Complaint For Divorce as well as the Acceptance of Service and either send or hand deliver these forms to your spouse.

STEP 4 - You will need to get a signed copy or original of the Acceptance of Service and attach it to the Summons and be sure to hand write on the back "Defendant Received and Accepted Service on _________" (write-in the date). Take both these forms and file with the clerk's office.

STEP 5 - Both parties should arrange to meet to complete the following forms:
Affidavit as to Status of Minor Child (Must be Completed for Every Minor Child)
Child Support Worksheet (If Minor Children)
Separation and Property Settlement Agreement
Financial Affidavit
Motion for Summary Judgment
Motion Cover Sheet
Notice of Hearing (Wait to hear from the Clerk on the blank about the court hearing date)
Divorce By Summary Judgment

STEP 6 - Go to the clerk's office and get a date from the clerk by filing a Motion for Summary Judgment. While still at the clerk's office, write-in your court hearing date in the Notice of Hearing and file it with the clerk. Get copies of both forms filed and send or hand deliver them to your spouse.

STEP 7 - Go to your hearing and bring all your completed and copies of filed divorce papers. If successful, you will be given a Certification of Divorce to complete and give to the clerk which makes your divorce complete in the State of North Carolina.
