The Big South Fork area has both Federal, State and Land Trust protected lands and is a geologic wonderland with just about anything rocks can do, arches, chimneys, gorges, pinnacles, waterfalls, caves, cliffs, etc. Amy had not seen one of the best, the Twin Arches, so we headed up on November 7, 2021, before the fall leaves were gone. Even the National Park Service says the Twin Arches are the “the most impressive rock arches in the eastern United States.” They would even rival those in Arches National Park. Two huge house sized arches side by side (the North Arch has a clearance of 51 feet, a span of 93 feet and its deck is 62 feet high while the South Arch has a clearance of 70 feet, a span of 135 feet and its deck is 103 feet high). We also hiked on down the valley to see the Charit Creek Lodge, somewhat like LeConte Lodge except it closes during the heat of summer and is open all winter.
