Story Text:

Once upon a time, there were two men walking through the mountains during a heavy snowstorm. They were both close to freezing to death. After hours they came to a cliff. As they looked down, they saw a man who had fallen down the cliff.

One of them said, “We have to go down to him and help him.” But his companion replied, “nobody can ask us to take care of him; we ourselves are in danger of dying.” The man looked down at the injured hiker and decided to help him. When his companion saw that he could not stop him from doing so, he left him and went on his way.

The other man climbed down to the injured man, lifted him painfully on his shoulders, and carried him up the hill. Through this effort he became warm and his heat was transferred to the victim. This saved them both from freezing to death.

After a while, they came across his former companion. He lay dead in the snow. Overtired, he had probably laid down and had frozen to death. For him, any help came too late. So, they went on and soon found shelter. When they got to safety the injured man looked at him and said, "He who loves his life will lose it."
