The town of West Reading, Pennsylvania was rocked by a deadly explosion at a chocolate factory on Friday evening.

The blast occurred on March 24th 2023, destroying one building and damaging a neighboring building.

As of late Friday night, various fire departments remained at the scene.

According to authorities, five people died and six others are missing as a result of the blast, which occurred just before 5 p.m. at the R.M. Palmer Co. plant on March 24th 2023.

But local officials said at a Saturday morning press conference that one person was rescued from the rubble overnight with five still missing, and said they could only confirm that two people had been killed, not the five that PEMA has reported.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, and some residents were displaced from the damaged apartment building.

Mayor Samantha Kaag told reporters the factory was “pretty leveled.”

“The building in the front, with the church and the apartments, the explosion was so big that it moved that building four feet forward, said Mayor Kaag.

The cause of the explosion is not yet clear, and the company has not issued a statement.

The Palmer company, which has been producing chocolate novelties since 1948 and has 850 employees at its West Reading headquarters.
