Every material for countertops has its own unique set of characteristics. Part of the fun of any countertop project is deciding which material best fits your design ideas and lifestyle. Here is a short description of what to expect from different materials:
Natural Stone Products -- Onyx, Marble, Granite
Because stone is a natural product it is highly varied in coloration and pattern. Even counters cut from the same slab of material can vary greatly in pattern and color. The patterns can also be 'directional', which can cause some unsightly affects at seams and corners if not planned properly. Only certain types of natural stone are consistent enough that selections can be made from color samples. Normally, you want to view the entire stone that you are considering for your project. However, if a color sample is appropriate, we can provide samples and suggestions for how to match stone sections for an even, coordinated look to your project.
Granite comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns. The smaller the pattern, the easier to 'match' different slabs for corners, L-shaped sections, etc. Granite is also one of the most popular choices for kitchens because of its hardness, heat resistance, durability, and low maintenance. Popular choices for bars, vanity tops and other countertops are onyx and marble. These stones can have large patterns, such as dramatic swirls, or small patterns, depending on the stone. Also, onyx and marble can be 'backlit' so light shines through, or from underneath, the stone. This provides a very striking effect at night.
Quartz Surfacing - Zodiaq, Caesarstone (engineered stone products)
Quartz is both beautiful and very consistent in pattern and color. In addition, some quartz can be 'backlit' so light shines through, or from underneath, the stone -- a very striking effect. Some color variation can occur from slab to slab. However, it is generally not noticeable. Color samples are generally accurate in color and pattern.
Solid Surface -- Corian, Meganite, Gibraltar
Solid Surface is very consistent in color and pattern. Any slight color variation that occurs from slab to slab is generally not noticeable. For making countertop selections, color samples are accurate in color and pattern.
Recycled Glass
Recycled glass is fairly consistent in both color and pattern. The random distribution of glass can cause the appearance of color variation. This is especially true at seams. Concrete
