We all generally believe that Mata Sita was the daughter of King Janak, whom he found while plowing the field. But some versions of Ramayana tell a different story, in which Mata Sita is said to be the daughter of Mandodari. Mandodari was the wife of Ravana, who lived with him very faithfully and righteously. So how is it possible that Mata Sita was the daughter of Mandodari? To know the mystery behind this, we have to read some other versions of Ramayana.
Such as Uttar Ramayana, Adbhut Ramayana, and many other books related to Ramayana in different languages. In all of these, it is said that Mata Sita was born from the womb of Ravana and Mandodari, but she was their spiritual daughter, not their worldly daughter. That is, she was born not from their physical relationship, but from their penance and devotion. For this, we have to know some events of Ravana’s life before this.
Ravana was a very powerful and intelligent demon, who asked for the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma. But Lord Brahma did not give him the boon of immortality, but gave him this boon that he could not be killed by any god, demon, snake, gandharva, yaksha, rakshasa, pisacha, apsara or kinnara. Ravana forgot to mention the name of human in this boon, because he considered human to be insignificant and weak. Because of this boon, Ravana started to consider himself omnipotent and started to oppress and injustice people everywhere.
Ravana considered himself the successor of Lord Brahma and misused his boon. He considered himself the second form of Brahma and started to ask for sacrifices from people in his name. He deceived people by calling himself the son of Brahma and confused them. He exploited people by calling himself the representative of Brahma and oppressed them. He insulted people by calling himself the part of Brahma and made them worship him.
In this way, Ravana tormented people with his ego and malice. He also defeated the gods with his strength and cunning. He acquired many weapons and skills to destroy his enemies. He also involved his loyal and faithful brothers Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana in his unjust deeds. He made his kingdom Lanka a golden city, in which his magnificent and huge palace was.
In this palace of Ravana, his wife Mandodari lived, who was very opposite to him in being virtuous and calm. Mandodari was very sad and worried about Ravana’s deeds, but she could not leave him as his wife. She tried to persuade him many times, but Ravana did not listen to her. He kept her as he wished, but did not love her.
Mandodari had no child from Ravana, which was a big sorrow for her. She considered her life as an incomplete dream, in which she got neither the love of her husband nor the happiness of a child. She dedicated her sorrow to the feet of Lord Brahma, and prayed to him for a beautiful and auspicious child. She also asked for forgiveness for her husband from Lord Brahma, and requested him to free him from his ego and misconduct, and show him the path of righteousness.
Lord Brahma saw her sincere and dependent devotion, and heard her prayer. He gave her a wonderful boon, according to which she would give birth to a child who would be very pure and virtuous, contrary to Ravana, who would destroy Ravana’s ego, who would purify Ravana’s misconduct, who would awaken Ravana’s righteousness, and who would arouse Ravana’s love. This child would be Ravana’s spiritual daughter, whose name would be Sita.
