C-27J SPARTAN - PRIDE OF THE ITALIAN | Military History |
The C-27J Spartan is a tactical transport aircraft developed and manufactured by Italy's Alenia Aermacchi Company (now Leonardo).
The C-27J design is based on Alenia's G-222 airframe, with Allison turboprops and advanced systems from Lockheed Martin.
Spartan is also capable of multi-mission combat in addition to the role of transporting goods, evacuating wounded soldiers, dropping paratroopers, refueling, humanitarian assistance, natural disaster response and firefighting.

Regarding technical specifications, the C-27J transport has a length of 22.07m, a wingspan of 28.07m, and a height of 9.64m. The aircraft has a payload of 11.3 tons and a maximum takeoff weight of 31.8 tons. The C-27J's cargo bay can carry armored vehicles such as the M113 or AML-90, 60 infantrymen, or 46 fully equipped paratroopers. Using two Rolls-Royce AE2100-D2A propeller engines with a capacity of 4,640 horsepower, the C-27J can reach a maximum speed of up to 602km/h, with a flight ceiling of 9,144m.

The highlight of this transporter is that the aircraft's cockpit is integrated with night vision goggles (NVG) with five multi-function color screens. The C-27J is also equipped with AESA active electronically scanned array radar, electro-optical/infrared system and different sensors depending on the mission. These sensors are detachable to analyze collected data and transmit data to the crew in real time.

The C-27J prototype first flew in September 1999 and was put into service with the Italian Air Force in May 2009.

Up to now, the C-27J aircraft is considered one of the best medium-range transports in the world.
