WASHINGTON American officials are making plans in the event of a possible terror attack during the Sochi Olympics in Russia.With the winter Olympic games less than three weeks away, credible threats have the military on high alert and war ships are heading to the region. Helicopters from those ships could fly quickly to the Sochi area for evacuations.C-17 aircraft have been placed on standby in Germany and could be in Sochi in about two hours, if needed.You'd hope the U.S. wouldn't be sitting around waiting for a telegram from Russia going 'Hey, come and get your people.' so to me, that's a common sense approach and the military should have robust plan to come in and do that, CNN law enforcement analyst Tom Fuentes said.The state department would take the lead in organizing any mission to move thousands of American officials and athletes out of harm's way.If an attack occurs, you're going to have chaos, Fuentes said. You'll have a large problem to get ships, and get helicopters, so merely getting your forces in to get your people out will be quite an event by itself.If an evacuation is ordered, the U.S. must first get Russian approval to move in -- which may not be easy given Russian President Vladimir Putin's insistence that his government can secure the games.
