The soccer ball is a kind of spherical polyhedron, also known as a fullerene, C60 (ball from 60 carbon atoms), and a truncated icosahedron (an icosahedron with its corners cut off or truncated).

It is simple to make this with only hexagons (leaving holes where the pentagons would be). You can link five hexagons to make a ring, then connect those to make this soccer ball shape.
