Yes—you can text 911 if talking is not possible (hearing/speech difficulty, unsafe to speak, or poor signal). Do this: open your texting app, type 911 in “To,” and send your location and a few words about the emergency. Keep it simple (no slang or emojis), then reply to the 911 operator’s questions. If your area doesn’t have Text-to-911, you’ll get a message telling you to call instead. When it’s safe, calling is still best.

How to text 911
Open Messages → type 911 in the “To” field
First message: your location + what you need (police, fire, medical)
Keep it short, use simple words, no abbreviations or emojis
Answer questions and follow instructions from the 911 center

Important - Call if you can—text if you can’t. Voice is still preferred where possible.

Text-to-911 is not available everywhere. If it’s unavailable, you should get a bounce-back message telling you to use another method. Check text911.info to see if your area has this feature before you need it.

Don’t send photos/videos or group texts; 911 can’t receive those in many areas. Put only 911 in the “To” line.
