Toward the end of Tuesday’s vice presidential debate, moderators asked the candidates whether former President Donald Trump refusing to cede power after losing the 2020 election was a threat to democracy.

Ohio Sen. JD Vance said Vice President Kamala Harris advocating for social media companies to combat misinformation online amounted to censorship and was a bigger threat to democracy than Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

“Kamala Harris is engaged in censorship at an industrial scale,” he said. She did it during COVID. She's done it over a number of other issues, and that to me is a much bigger threat to democracy than what Donald Trump said when he said that protesters should peacefully protest on Jan. 6.”

Vance and Walz are facing each other in their first, and possibly last, vice presidential debate, hosted by CBS in New York on Oct. 1.

Both are relatively unknown to the broader American public. Walz was a U.S. House member before becoming governor of Minnesota. Vance is in his first term as a senator from Ohio.
