Its only taken us 2 years to complete the heads!😂 - somehow, with so much other work on the boat, we got to the stage where the heads were usable and then they got neglected until recently when we finished up the aesthetic work. We have always had the convenience of marina and club ablutions but now with our preparations to leave, we are finally doing the finishing touches on a lot of projects.
We had two functional toilets on the yacht before launching her two years ago. Very nice new Jabsco electric heads that flush off of salt. We didn't even have the hand basins installed at that stage, brushing teeth and washing hands happened in the galley sink for a short while.😜
Robin made up the cupboards whilst still at Mykonos during the initial hard lockdown of the pandemic but the final finishes were done here at Saldanha in the past few months.
going back to the beginning, when we bought Saoirse the heads were just empty dark green fibreglass shells, putting this video together has even reminded us what a long way we have come with this boat refit.
Basic plumbing and electrics were fitted into the hulls before Denver and Colben created the new fibreglass floors from yet another of Robin's meticulously made templates. After that was fibreglassed in place, Robin started to build the cabinet around the already fitted toilets. Once all that was in the walls were painted with Flowcoat / Topcoat, a two part epoxy based paint. Its taken a couple of coats to get the right finish. We even had additional repair work to the topcoat in the port side head after the cleat in the deck above was ripped out in a storm (link to that video below) - so this has all been a long drawn out process.
When we did the galley countertops (video in link below) - we decided to carry the bamboo through to the heads and are really pleased with the final look. We had enough left over to do doors for the faces of the cabinets too.
Shower areas on a yacht, as you can imagine, are generally very small. We are lucky to have a fairly spacious separate shower area which is not always the case on a yacht of our size - a small adjustment made by the previous owner where he removed a passage cupboard to create a longer bathroom, creating the extra space for the shower. Its tough to lose the storage space but made for a lovely head on each side of the yacht.
I also think Bertie (my maiden hair fern) makes a great addition to the starboard head, I'm mocked by the family about how much attention and love he gets but look at how beautiful he is!! 😉 Keeping him safe when we are on our passage will be a challenge, but I'm up for it.

If you are interested in why a yacht/ship toilet is called a "head" - The term “head” used for a marine toilet started because of the location of the toilet on the earliest sailing ships. For crewmen, the facilities were located at the head of the ships. The front of ships had a figurehead: a carved wooden figure or bust fitted on the bow of the ship. The toilet was located there set just above the water line with slots cut near the floor level to use wave action to wash the toilet.😒
