中元節是道教的叫法，在佛教中，稱為盂蘭盆節。
依照佛家的說法，農曆七月十五日這天，佛教徒舉行「盂蘭盆法會」供奉佛祖和僧侶，濟度六道苦難，以及報謝父母長輩慈愛之恩。

中元節由來
現今台灣的中元節其實是結合了道教與佛教思想，而農曆七月十五普渡這天，道教稱為「中元節」，而佛教則稱「盂蘭盆節」。道教的「中元節」原本是祭祀田地之神，感謝大地加入道教種種事宜，而這天剛好又是掌管亡魂罪責的中元地官生日，人們為了減除祖先生前的罪責，便祈求地官大帝能寬赦，於是在這天祭拜祖先，這天也會誦經、辦法事，以三牲五果來超渡亡魂。

On the 15th day of the 7th lunar month, Taoism refers to this day as the "Ghost Festival," while Buddhism calls it the "Ullambana Festival." Originally, the Taoist Ghost Festival was a day for worshipping the Earth God to express gratitude for the blessings of the land and its involvement in various Taoist matters. Coincidentally, this day also marks the birthday of the Taoist deity who oversees the sins of deceased souls. To alleviate the sins of their ancestors, people pray to the Earth Official Emperor for forgiveness. As a result, on this day, they worship their ancestors, recite scriptures, and hold rituals to deliver the spirits of the deceased, offering sacrifices of meat and fruits to help them find peace.
