Catching Big Sword Fish 462lb

What a way to finish the weekend! Ben, Clinton and I landed the first Sword of the season on my 750 Offshore Boat.
We shot out from Tutukaka. When we got to the spot we quickly rigged up a big squid on to BKK Monster Circle Hook. The spot looked really fishy with lots of bait. Marking the bait was a breeze with the Simrad Sounder. Soon after we had a bite but it was a soft one. We left it on the water for 30 minutes before we got the bait up. It had a little slash but still in good condition.
The Yamaha helped keep us in one spot on fish mode - it is such a helpful feature. The more I use it, the more I love it. We set the bait back down in the same spot and after 1 minute we had another bite but this one was bigger! We cranked the reel and the rod went tighter and it was on. We quickly got Ben ready and he was on. Fish was coming up quickly. I knew it was sword from it's behavior. Often when they are hooked they come up for a look and then they go back down again. When it came up it did some splashing around and we knew for sure it was sword but couldn't tell how big it was at this stage. It went back down to 100m and stayed down. After about 2.5 hours it started doing smaller circles and we started putting more drag. We pulled up the fish but it was tail hooked and dead so we got it onto the boat and put it into the ice tek cooler bag. It was super hard to bring this huge sword fish but we got there at the end.
Congratulations Ben for catching his first Sword fish. I am sure there are 100 or more families enjoying sword steak this week.
I want to thank the guys on the water that day for moving around for us when we were heading there way fighting this fish.
