This time we will test the effectiveness of citronella oil as an anti-mosquito repellent.
Mix 10 drops of citronella oil with 100 ml of water and the anti-mosquito repellent is ready.
Is it really that simple? There is no scientific evidence that citronella oil repel mosquitoes. We will test it today.
We use 15 drops in 50ml of oil to make sure the citronella really dissolves.
Our colleague Sergej applied the mixture to the marked area on the arm and let it work for about 10 minutes so that it can take effect. The rest of the arm was treated with a commercial anti-mosquito spray (with 25% DEET).

We used a cage with 200 female Yellow Fever mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti - And no, they don't have yellow fever. We breed them in our labs for development tests on our mosquito traps as well as our research on anti-mosquito devices. - ) to demonstrate this very clearly: Sergej, our fearless mosquito breeding specialist, introduces his hand while having the citronella oil on his arm into the cage. As you can see, the mosquitoes don't care and they land on the treated area of his arm. And they are biting a lot in a short period of time.


For comparison, you can clearly see that the areas on the arm treated with the mosquito spray with 25% DEET do not have any bites. Some mosquitoes landed for a moment, but they fly away without biting.
