This paper argues for a re-appraisal of the scholia as a literary source, drawing on examples from the scholia on Apollonius' 'Argonautica' and emphasising some distinct features of this corpus and the significance of scholia for our understanding of ancient reception.

Lisa Doyle is a PhD student at Trinity College Dublin, working on the funded project 'Margins of Learning: Exploring the scholia on Apollonius' Argonautica'. She also holds a BA in Classical Civilisations and Modern Irish from TCD, as well as an MSc in Classics from the University of Edinburgh.

***Please note this clarification of what is said at 4:08: The 'Argonautica' is the only epic to survive in full from the Hellenistic period.
