In the early morning hours of Thursday November 8th 2018 a fire began burning near the junction of Pulga Road and Camp Creek Road a few miles east of Paradise California. Driven by strong winds, low humidity and tinder dry brush, the “Camp Fire” quickly spread in what could best be called a tsunami of fire. By the time the fire was extinguished 17 days later on November 25th, it was dubbed the most destructive fire in modern California history. The 240 square mile blaze (Hiroshima was approximately 7 square miles) destroyed over 18,000 structures. Over 85 people perished. The total victim count may never be exactly known.

In late December, as the community struggled to recover, former Chico resident, Shane Grammer, who now works as a commercial artist in Los Angeles came to Paradise to paint one of his iconic murals on the remains of a chimney on the home of his friends Shane and Jennifer Edwards, Word quickly spread about the evocative female face and Grammer returned to Paradise in mid January 2019 to execute 10 more murals and hang a temporary art installation of a face painted on a clear thin plastic sheet.

Grammer’s murals have gained international attention and have become part of the healing process. Efforts are being made to preserve some of them.
