While it’s common knowledge that free cheese is only in the mousetraps, there are the best free antivirus options that can make or break your online experience, hidden amongst malicious or scammy providers. Ready to check them out?

Bitdefender - a free antivirus with Real-time malware protection

Bitdefender is more or less a similar case. It’s an antivirus provider with one of the best reputations on the market, according to independent audits by AV-test and AV-comparatives.

I noticed some of you guys also like Bitdefender quite a bit, but for everyone else, let me explain what makes Bitdefender a great free antivirus option. To begin with, unlike TotalAV, Bitdefender includes real-time protection for free, so you don’t have to bother yourself with manual scans every few days. That doesn’t mean you can’t scan - the Bitdefender free version has this feature as well, alongside web attack prevention. Still, all those things are limited to one device, similarly to TotalAV. Even if that doesn't stop Bitdefender from being possibly the best free antivirus for Windows 10 or 11, still keep it in mind.

While this is a lot of functionality for a free provider, Bitdefender’s premium offers even more security features. While a VPN, password manager, and optimization tools might not be needed for everybody, I would honestly recommend the premium version for phishing protection alone. It’s a growing threat with millions of victims all around the world. Ransomware is not something to scoff at either, so having measures against it is a given.

-----------------------------------

TotalAV - a great free AV with anti-malware and anti-phishing measures:

TotalAV will be our first free antivirus today. The most important thing is that I’m not worried about getting a scammy provider here: TotalAV is a reputable antivirus with a long history of development and improvement. It consistently ranks high on independent audits by AV-test and AV-comparatives, but that’s the premium version getting tested… How does the free one fare?

Well, I think we all understand that all free antivirus versions are limited by their nature. In TotalAV’s case it has an anti-malware scanner and anti-phishing protection for one device… And that’s it. It means that you are limited to only one device at any time, there’s no real-time protection, system clean-up tools, or additional security add-ons, like VPN, ad blocker, or password manager. While those add-ons are not mandatory, real-time protection can save you a lot of time, since it monitors your device for approaching threats at all times. Without it, free users are forced to do regular scans to keep themselves safe, which I won’t recommend for beginners, who might not keep to the schedule.

Avira - a free antivirus with additional features

Another top free antivirus pick is Avira. AV-Test and AV-Comparatives gave it high marks, so no security concerns there. What do you get with Avira's free version? The key feature is real-time protection, though it lacks web and email protection, unlike Bitdefender. However, Avira stands out with additional free features like a file shredder, file quarantine, device optimization tools, a limited password manager, and a VPN with a 500 MB monthly data cap. Those last two are limited, so I'd suggest a premium version if those are important to you.
