How to Grow Sweet Potato Slips

10 STEPS:
1. Choose a mature sweet potato or yam. You can buy from any grocery store.
2. Stick 4- 5 toothpicks out of the sides of the yam or camote equidistant apart and near the middle. If the yam is too large, you can cut it into half or any desired length.

3. Place the yam or camote into the glass container of water with the toothpicks holding half of the yam out by balancing it on the rim of the glass.


4. Move the jar with the yam onto the windowsill that gets a lot of sunlight.

5. Wait for a few weeks for the small leafy slips to begin sprouting out of the top of the yam.

6. Harvest the slips. When the top of the yam is covered with slips, carefully twist the slips individually. Many slips do not have roots yet and will resemble small leaves and short stems.

7. Put your slips in a glass of water or any container, so that the stems are submerged in the water until roots have formed in the bottom.

8. Add fresh water once a day or so to keep the slips healthy. If any slips are not forming roots or begin to wilt, throw them into your compost bin.

9. Check the yams by touching them. If they become soft and tender, cut and throw them into your compost bin, then change with fresh water. Keep on adding water warm water below the rim when needed.

10. When slips have developed roots, just keep on adding or changing water. Wait for planting season, so slips can be directly planted into your garden than planted into smaller pots to save space.
