December 5th in Phoenix, Arizona — we pulled up to Sunnyslope High School to watch a heavyweight matchup between 4⭐️ Colorado commit Rider Portela and the #1 sophomore in the nation, Jakyi Miles of Mesa High School.

From the jump, Sunnyslope looked like a well-oiled machine. Legendary head coach Ray Portela continues to show why he’s one of the toughest and most respected coaches in Arizona. Fundamentals. Culture. Buy-in. Winning. That’s Sunnyslope basketball.

Rider Portela backed up everything that makes him a 4⭐️ prospect and future high-major two-way star. Shot-making, defense, leadership — he proved why he’s one of the best guards in the country and why Colorado is getting a certified dog.

Mesa’s superstar Jakyi Miles, a future NBA Lottery Pick and potential #1 overall draft selection one day, still got his. The kid is different. His athleticism, pace, and playmaking were on full display, and he had moments where he looked completely unguardable.

But Sunnyslope was simply too much:
– 6'10 junior Darius Washington dominated the interior, filling the stat sheet with rebounds, put-backs, great passing, and hustle plays.
– Nash Parmley, the certified sniper, knocked down shots from everywhere.
– Kadinn Williams added perimeter firepower with tough shot-making.
– Delton Prescott controlled the tempo at point guard, keeping Sunnyslope balanced and poised.

This team is deep, disciplined, and dangerous — absolutely a contender for the AIA Open Division Championship this season.

Mesa (4–1 coming in) is still a serious 6A state title threat. Their backcourt with Miles and Daijon Grayson is elite, and as the season goes on, expect the Jackrabbits to pick up steam and make noise in March.
