In this presentation explores how cigarette consumption has been regularly declining for over 50 years and will further decline with the advent of new policies such as new FDA pictorial warnings on cigarette packs and bans on the sales of combusted tobacco products and the increased popularity of vaping products. It will also discuss e-cigarettes and the COVID-19 pandemic.


Kurt M. Ribisl, Ph.D., is the Jo Anne Earp Distinguished Professor and Chair in the Department of Health Behavior at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. He is also the Program Leader for Cancer Prevention and Control at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.


He received his doctorate in community psychology from Michigan State University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular disease prevention and epidemiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the author of over 200 scientific articles.


Ribisl’s primary research interest is population-level efforts to reduce tobacco use, with a particular emphasis on regulating the sales and marketing of tobacco products at retail outlets. He has researched tobacco product marketing, pricing, promotions, and youth access, as well as how to regulate e-cigarettes at the local, state, and federal levels.
