The concept of a hammer pass is simply throwing the ball to the opposite corner along the baseline, and it typically happens when someone is driving from the corner or the slot/wing area.

When you drive, and force the defense to help, more times than not, the defender who is guarding the opposite corner has to come in and help which makes the opposite corner available. Learning to throw this pass successfully can get your team a lot of open catch & shoot 3s.
