Often overshadowed by New York, Philadelphia was host to several great jazz and dance bands during the jazz age, and was a jumping off point for many of the era’s greatest bandleaders and musicians. This set examines the early output of three of the band’s most popular groups: violinist Vincent Rizzo’s band of the Hotel Sylvania (Okeh), bandleader Johnny Hamp and saxophonist Earle Frankhouser’s Famous Kentucky Serenaders of the Hotel Walton roof gardens (Grey Gull), and drummer Charlie Kerr’s Orchestra of the Cafe L’Aiglon. These working bands display a range of sounds, from the out-and-out hot of “Just Leave Me Alone” and the out choruses of the Kerr material, to the sweet light-classical influence on “Spain” and “In the Shade of a Sheltering Tree.” Of note are early solos by Eddie Lang on banjo (his first recordings), Leo McConnville on “Good Morning, Dearie,” and pianist Charles H. Buckwalter on “You Know You Belong to Somebody Else.”
