What Chomsky is thinking from my reading of it is. If this is where we are at, if it is a two horse race, go for the one you have more chance of influencing. These are the odds as he sees them at this moment in time. Some on the left might not agree with his arithmetic calculation. But I am not hearing anybody coming up with a more reasoned tactic. The left have 50 years of neoliberal rule to circumnavigate and defeat. There have been gigantic leaps forward been made, non more spectacular than socialism becoming a thing in the US, the Bernie Sanders movement, and the reawakening of unionisation and so on. But there is a lot of work to be done before any socialist takes up the mantel in the white house. (if that is a place any socialist would want to be in the first place) and there will be many more times where these damage limitations need to be made. But as the man suggests. It is a tactic not a life choice. Take a few minutes to pull the lever then get on with your activism to build a movement strong enough so we do not have to make these kinds of choices.
