Episode 19: Fight For Your Right

Emma’s mom is away for a few days and it’s just her and her step-dad, Mr. Simpson. He’s supportive of Emma’s involvement in “Food for Thought”; the student group who wants to remove genetically modified (GM) foods from the school cafeteria. Emma has high hopes for their meeting with Principal Raditch. But he turns down their requests - claiming budget constraints and that the jury’s still out on GM foods.

Emma is determined to fight the decision. As she attempts to convince students to boycott the cafeteria, a food fight erupts and Emma’s blamed. She’s suspended from classes, putting Mr. Simpson in an awkward position. Angered by it all, Emma defies her suspension and pickets the school. Raditch demands that she apologize for her actions. When Emma admits to Simpson that she went too far, but that it was based on her convictions, he offers his support. Emma faces the school and stands by her beliefs – accepting the consequences.

Spinner has his heart set on a brand new designer shirt – but it’s way out of his price range. It doesn’t help that his best friend, Jimmy, doesn’t have to worry about money. His Dad buys him all the latest gear – even a much-coveted MP3 player. Spinner tries to swallow his jealousy but when Jimmy teases him and hurts his pride, Spinner takes Jimmy’s MP3 player and seriously contemplates selling it for the money. When Jimmy finds out, Spinner is overcome by regret. It’ll take a while to make it up to Jimmy, but Spinner’s new job in the cafeteria might be a start.
