After the eyes, the mouth is the most important feature of facial animation. The mouth is flexible, and emotional, and can add character to any scene. However, the mouth is also an incredibly overwhelming tool. Many animators will over-animate the mouth, or run in the opposite direction, and barely animate the mouth. The balance is found by not following any hard and fast “rules’ of the mouth, but by understanding the energy of your dialogue and the emotion of your scene. Is your character angry and tense? So is the mouth. Is your character lying and faking their smile?
