In April 2024, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Polish Green Roof Conference, held at a hotel nestled on a sprawling plot that was entirely transformed into a magnificent green roof. As I stepped onto the main green roof, located at ground level, I was greeted by a stunning formal landscape atop a car park. The commitment to sustainability was evident, as even the entrances to the parking area were adorned with green roofs.

But that's not all – from a look at Google earth I could tell extensive green roofs graced the roofs high above. From Google Earth, they appeared to be simple sedum blanket systems

As I ventured further, something caught my attention – what seemed to be large bio-retention ponds. Though technically known as bio-retention ponds, I prefer the more captivating term "rain gardens." These captivating features showcased how rainwater enters and exits at full capacity. Towards the west of the development, I encountered a few rain gardens where the aggregate base had eroded, revealing plates with pipes beneath, illustrating the water's journey into the pits. Here, I witnessed vegetation that had soaked up the rain from the previous day, with honey bees delicately sipping from moss and catkins on the garden floor.

At the edge of the development, a swale gracefully received rainwater from the main road to Warsaw Chopin International Airport, highlighting the ingenious ways in which sustainable practices can be integrated into our urban landscapes.

While formal intensive green roofs may not be my personal preference, I was truly impressed by the dedication and innovation showcased in this project. which is why my green roof videos are created in collaboration with organizations such as the EFB European Federation of Green Roofs and Walls Associations, GRO - the UK Green Roof Trade Body, and World Green Roof Day #WGRD2024.
