Many students are motived to draw speed forms but feel blocked when it comes to knowing exactly what to draw. Using different inspirational forms outside the realm of cars and car design can provide the needed catalyst to jump start your sketching and creativity.

For this video, we cover 3 forms of sea life and how they can be inspiration for drawing speed forms whose techniques are the foundation of any car design drawing.

Many students ask why they need to draw speed forms at all? Can I just keep drawing cars? Practicing your speed forms provide 2 important lessons to the aspiring car designer: They improve your line quality so you can get your lines to flows and look fast.

Secondly, using sea life for inspiration encourages the aspiring car designer to develop new form vocabularies opening the way for truly original car design shapes when you go back to drawing cars.

Without this exercise it will take you longer to improve your line quality. Moreover, you may end up drawing the same shapes over the over, never improving or growing in your automotive design vocabulary.

The video uses a great white shark, a whale shark and a ray to show how these timeless forms can be the basis of speed form development. If you find a great form of sea life that you use for the basis of your speed forms or your car design drawings, be sure to let us know in the comments section.
