Fullerene is a special type of a molecule of Carbon, and it differs from other ones in its atomic bond. Atoms of Carbon are connected in a specific mesh in a fullerene with fused hexagonal rings of five to seven atoms. The molecule itself reminds a football, that is why fullerenes are often informally called buckyballs or buckytubes if they are in a cylindrical form.

We always like to stress that shungite is a unique and special stone, so the question that we are asked all the time is: why is that? Well, shungite is one of the very few instances of fullerenes in stable natural form on our planet. Most of the fullerenes are produced through lab experiments, and that’s how it was in the first years after their discovery, while with shungite all you have to do is to pick up a stone to get yourself some fullerenes. The amount of fullerenes in a shungite stone varies depending on shungite type, the purest elite shungite consists of up to ninety-eight percent of Carbon in fullerene, you cannot find better fullerene specimens on the Earth. And it is found almost exclusively in the Republic of Karelia in Russia.

Almost all of the famous shungite properties depend on fullerenes, especially physical ones. With their mesh structure, fullerenes become some sort of a sponge, which can absorb negative and toxic elements in the environment, for example, if put in water, shungite will soak up bacteria and negative elements, making this water ninety-five percent cleaner. That is why more and more industries incorporate shungite water filters as their main force for water purification.
