Vibe Coding, AI, and the Future of Software Development

Is vibe coding the worst idea in software engineering—or the beginning of a new era? Dave Farley (author of Modern Software Engineering) recently argued against vibe coding in his video “Vibe Coding is the Worst Idea of 2025.”

I look at his points where he explains Andrej Karpathy’s definition of vibe coding and his views about how people without the right processes and mindset will fail. While I agree with many of his points, I found his solution to the matter of AI assisted coding as missing the larger opportunity.

I also evaluate OpenAI’s Specification Model (presented by Sean Grove), and explore why I ultimately believe AI is the future of software development but that OpenAI's approach is problematic.

Yes, this is a one-sided debate about intelligence, software craftsmanship, and the age of AI-assisted programming.
