An introduction to the project "Mountain biodiversity and the Sustainable Development Goals: Knowledge for synergistic action" of the R4D (Research for Development) programme funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. This four year project led by the University of Bern -in collaboration with partners in Tanzania, Bolivia, and Nepal - aims at providing policy-relevant knowledge towards opportunities for the sustainable management and conservation of mountain biodiversity (SDG15.4) that address competing sustainable development goals, limited resources, and complex governance structures.
