Worldwide, 6.5 million people suffer from #inflammatoryboweldisease (IBD), a chronic disorder without a cure. Leading to severe pain, exhaustion and in some cases colon cancer. Although therapies exist, not everyone responds well to them leaving patients anxious and stressed.

What if the solution lies in our oceans, rivers, and lakes?
Numerous #algae species produce an almost infinite number of compounds. Many of these molecules have health-beneficial effects. They can, for instance, relieve inflammation and block pain. In the research project Algae4IBD, experts from various fields look at this untapped potential. They will study #seaweeds and microalgae to find new solutions for Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and other forms of IBD.

Algae4IBD will go one step further and develop new treatments with algae molecules as key ingredient; both #medicine and functional #food in the hopes of improving the life of IBD patients everywhere.
