Hey guys it's Barratt with the Gimpy Camper. About a year ago I upgraded and moved the majority of my rig's electrical system. I had a few key goals when doing this. I wanted to better be able to control any parasitic draw and what is powered at any given time. This comes into play even more so in the winter. Occasionally in winter, my batteries do die because my 300 watts of solar doesn't get enough sun to keep the batteries charged. Now I live in SE TN and we don't have a lot of snow, but we just have a month or two that we don't seem to get enough sun. I do generally use the camper throughout the winter so I like for everything to be ready to go. Truthfully right now I have the camper at my dad's house in northern Michigan for a family emergency and I plan on keeping it all winter. We will have a video about our winter adventure as well. Now with my lithium batteries, I'm not as concerned because unlike lead acid batteries I don't have to keep them charged above 50%. My Lion Energy batteries actually support draining to 0%. So in order to get an electrical system that serves us better and goes the extra mile that we need I attacked this from two prongs. I added a third Lion energy battery, which is also something you can do with lithium that you can't with lead acid. Any degradation in a single battery can actually lower your whole system. This is why when you replace lead acid batteries you need to replace them all at once. With lithium batteries, depending on the manufacturer you can do this a year or two later and there is such minimal loss of voltage in the original batteries that it does not affect the system. On top of adding the third battery, I did move them back out to the front storage area which is where my factory battery bank was located. Another goal I was working on was to create more room in the basement. I have sealed the front compartment around the landing gear and I used to be against putting electrical components here for fear of water damage when traveling in the rain but apparently, I'm over that these days.
