There's a major shortcut you can take in Labyrinth Zone Act 1 that skips most of the act entirely. It requires a bit of a tricky jump back up to the surface, though.

After hitting a switch which opens a door next to it, a horizontally moving platform also loads above the surface. It carries Sonic over to a much shorter route above the usual path.

In Revision 0 of the game, there were 49 total obtainable rings when this path was taken. Revision 1 added a single ring near the start of the new path, allowing 50 rings to be acquired. As such, a Big Ring can now load at the end of the level if all rings are collected when taking this path.
