The Heisei Godzilla Films Aren't Good

Over the past few decades, the Heisei Godzilla films have received no shortage of praise from a sizable chunk of the Godzilla community. Fans of these films often cite rich continuity or mythology, Shinji Nishikawa's take on classic and new characters alike, well-written narratives, and committing the definitive interpretation of Godzilla to the silver screen as the reasons for holding them in high regard and among the best features the long-running series has to offer. In addition, Miki Saegusa, the physic woman with a soft spot for Godzilla, has cemented herself in the hearts of fans as one of the greatest characters to appear in kaiju eiga.

But how well do these claims and films themselves hold up to scrutiny? Not very well. Instead of looking at all seven Heisei films, I will talk about what I call the G-Force Trilogy [Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla II, Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla vs Destoroyah] as the bulk of the most commonly praised elements are given the most attention there. Let's do this.
