This Video: This aircraft, an Avro Anson Mk I was restored in New Zealand by Bill Reid. The aircraft is now based in Europe.
The Anson was a British twin-engine aircraft that served primarily as a maritime patrol, reconnaissance, and training aircraft during the late 1930s and World War II. First introduced in 1936, it was powered by two Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah IX radial engines, giving it a top speed of around 188 mph (303 km/h). Originally designed for coastal reconnaissance, the type quickly became a vital multi-role aircraft, used for crew training, transport, and even light bombing. It was one of the first aircraft in the Royal Air Force to feature a retractable landing gear, though it remained manually operated. Despite being outclassed in combat by faster enemy aircraft, the Anson remained in widespread service throughout the war, with over 11,000 units built. Its reliability and versatility made it a crucial training platform for bomber and transport crews, ensuring a lasting legacy in military aviation history.
