No slipstream in Mexico qualifying; Ferrari SF24 setup choices & Carlos Sainz's skill in handling S2

Ferrari, led by Carlos Sainz, will start at the front of the grid for today's Mexican Grand Prix at the 4.304-kilometer Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. Sainz delivered an impressive performance during qualifying, especially in contrast to Charles Leclerc, who struggled. From the third free practice session onward, it was evident that the Ferrari displayed some instability in the central sector, similar to what was observed on Friday. This issue stemmed from setup choices aimed at striking a balance between performance in the slower sections and speed in the faster parts of the circuit. The technicians from Maranello focused on enhancing the car's stability specifically in the second sector.

During qualifying, there was a noticeable shift in performance across the sectors, with the drivers achieving a partial "re-stabilization" during their final attempts in Q3. The Ferrari drivers sacrificed some speed in the first sector to gain improved lateral grip at higher velocities. In the final free practice session, adjustments were made to the suspension, including changes to the roll characteristics and increased stiffness of the anti-roll bars both front and rear. Reducing the roll angle optimizes the car's aerodynamics since downforce is affected by the floor's positioning, which is highly sensitive to changes in angle.

They may also have lowered the ride height by 1 or 2 millimeters, enhancing downforce noticeably. This could explain their strong performance on the curbs. It is also possible that adjustments were made to the dampers to refine the "bound & rebound" phases of suspension movement. McLaren demonstrated solid performance in the first sector, benefiting from good handling over bumps. However, they could not match the speed of the two SF-24 cars, likely due to a slightly lower setup with greater stiffness.

In essence, a softer compression setting allows the suspension to better absorb impacts from curbs. However, this configuration might have difficulties managing roll. Thus, achieving a balance between anti-roll bars and damping systems poses a significant challenge. Importantly, it should be noted that the slipstream Sainz utilized behind Nico Hülkenberg in the first sector was not a critical factor in his performance. Instead, it was his exceptional handling skills that enabled him to secure pole position.
