STORYLINE:

Thousands of Italian-American gathered on fifth avenue to watch the annual Columbus Day Parade in New York on Monday.

US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia served as the parade's Grand Marshal.

There was some controversy this year over the presence of Italian Minister responsible for expatriates Mirko Tremaglia.

The right-wing politician has said in the past that he is proud of his involvement in the fascist army of Benito Mussolini after World War II.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was also marching in the parade.

When asked about Tremaglia, he said: "I don't have a lot of say in who's invited to march in this parade. I'm just thrilled that they invited me and I'm going to march and have a good time."

Tremaglia was invited by the Columbus Citizens Foundation which organise the parade every year in New York.

Waving flags and chanting "Viva Italia", the crowd cheered as marching bands and floats decorated in green white and red passed by.

Nancy Vaccariello was born in Naples, Italy and came to America 33 years ago.

She said she wouldn't miss the parade for anything.

Vaccariello said: "It's a special day for us because we are real Italians and we waited for one year to see this parade of Columbus Day."

Italian-American Angelo Raus was sporting a tri-colour scarf and his wife had a matching hat.

Raus said: "This day, it's when Columbus discovered United States from Italy back in 1492 and we are proud to be Italian and American."

The Columbus Day Parade started shortly before noon at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue, and ended 35 blocks later at 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.
