Amidst the fallout of the Kargil War and increasing civil-military tensions, on October 12th, 1999 the Pakistani Army under the command of Chief of Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf launched a coup d'état against the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

With Musharraf on an official visit to Sri Lanka, Sharif moved to sack and replace him from his post. Officers loyal to Musharraf alerted him and refused to acknowledge his dismissal.

Musharraf quickly boarded a return flight to Karachi but Sharif ordered authorities to not let his plane land. As the plane ran dangerously low on fuel, army personnel seized the airport allowing Musharraf to land.

Troops from the infamous 111th "triple one" brigade of 10th Corps were ordered to secure the PM's residence and PTV headquarters in Islamabad. Sharif and his cabinet were placed under house arrest and Musharraf would later announce the suspension of the constitution, dissolving national and provincial assemblies and dismissing Sharif's government.
