Описание к видео Panel 2: Land Use, Phosphorus Run-off, and Understanding the Physical System

There is a rich array of academic research on phosphorus levels, movement, and pollution being conducted across the UW System. In this panel, academic researchers presented findings related to phosphorus in the natural environment, and described relationships between phosphorus runoff and land use management. Presentations included findings related to: (a) eutrophication in the Great Lakes and the impact of climate change on the efficacy of phosphorus management practices; (b) the short-term impact of phosphorus management practices on water quality outcomes; (c) concerning trends in areas with high phosphorus accumulation; and (d) transformative land cover and land use change to retain soil and phosphorus while helping clean groundwater, reduce flooding, enhance biodiversity, and provide profitable and productive milk and meat production.

Dr. Klump, former Dean and Professor Emeritus at the School of Freshwater Sciences at UW-Milwaukee, discussed phosphorus issues in the Great Lakes generally, with a specific focus on eutrophication and dead zones in Green Bay, including the impact climate change will have on future management practices.

Dr. Andarge, a Professor of Economics in the Department of Resource Economics at UMass Amherst, presented research conducted with colleagues while at UW-Madison. The findings include an analysis of the efficacy of local manure management ordinances on dairy farms in Wisconsin, with an assessment of how changes in local regulations impact water quality outcomes.

Dr. Booth, a Research Scientist in the Departments of Agronomy and Civil & Environmental Engineering at UW-Madison, discussed recent trends in the major drivers of phosphorus transport and county-level agricultural phosphorus budgets across Wisconsin to reveal the impacts of management changes, including a discussion of what is required to reach current water quality goals.

Dr. Jackson, Campbell-Bascom Professor of Grassland Ecology in the Department of Agronomy at UW-Madison and Principal Investigator of Grassland 2.0, discussed the importance of transforming agriculture from extractive and leaky row crops grown to feed confined livestock to well-managed grazing on perennial grasslands that provides delicious and nutritious milk and meat while cleaning water, reducing flooding, helping to stabilize climate, and enhancing biodiversity.

Katy Schultz, President of the Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin, moderated this panel.
