Around two-thirds of New Zealand households have a heat pump. That's one of the highest rates of uptake in the world so, when it comes to heating, we're doing pretty well on the electrification front.

As Rewiring Aotearoa's Jay Salzke explained in his Electrify Queenstown presentation, heat pumps can save households around $1000 per year on their bills because they are much better at using energy to do their job than fossil fuel equivalents.

And there's no competition when it comes to emissions.

Elsewhere in the house, hot water heat pumps rely on the same technology and while they are also growing in popularity here and can also save households thousands, they are still fairly rare.

If you want to see the biggest boost in efficiency, you'll need to look in the garage. Most cars only convert about one quarter of the energy in petrol into motion. The rest is lost as heat, light, vibration and sound. Around 90% of the energy in an electric vehicle is used to move it.

While the upfront cost of electric machines is often higher, their remarkable efficiency makes them much cheaper to run. And that's where a lot of the lifetime savings come from.
