A Night in Appalachia is more than just a track — it’s a memory. This piece was inspired by a strange night on the Appalachian Trail when I was hiking with my good friend Dave and his fiancée Cynthia.
We had walked straight into the aftermath of an ice storm: trees covered in glassy ice, branches cracking, and a forest that felt both beautiful and dangerous. Seeking shelter, we camped inside an abandoned A-frame cabin behind a Holiday Inn.
That’s when it happened.
The sky lit up with three silent flashes of light, unlike anything we’d ever seen. People from the motel shouted, “Did you see that?” and confirmed what we saw. But in that eerie moment, we didn’t know if it was a sheriff coming to chase us out… or something far stranger.
That unforgettable night became the inspiration for this track.
