For some that subscribe to a Cold War view, the current conflict is the result of a great game between the US and Russia. NATO is the prime cause of this horrific conflict in some people’s minds. And for others it is the result of a global industrial-military complex that feeds off conflict and chaos. But for Ukrainians it is a fight for survival; they tend to see Russia as a local, imperial aggressor. Today I am unpacking these interpretations with Yehor Brailian, journalist and expert on colonialism in history.

Yehor Brailian’s areas of expertise are colonialism, the international history of the twentieth century, British history and politics, as well as security in the media. He is Special Correspondent for ArmyInform, covering international security and defence cooperation of Ukraine together with military aid and the phenomenon of multinational military units. He also covers the Ukraine NATO relationship. He has also worked as a Journalist at the Ukrainian TV station 24 Channel. He has a PhD in History and wrote his thesis on British colonial and postcolonial policy in the Caribbean colonies.
