"3 Steps to Enlightenment" is a digital picture story, made for the art prize of the city of Aschaffenburg. It's a retelling of the fairy tale "The Ugly Duckling" set in Aschaffenburg. It's divided three scene sections represent the steps to enlightenment.
Step 1 "Awakening" depicts the birth of the chicks on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Castle, including the swan baby. The awakening symbolizes inner realization. At this stage, one begins to feel that there must be more than what one has previously been. One distinguishes oneself from the normal thinking of one's peers. In Step 2 "Experience", one feels a consequence of inner growth: rejection. It shows how in the Schönbusch Park, the growing swan is ostracized by the other ducks. The unfamiliar personality appears strange and off-putting.
At the 3rd step, the 'Enlightenment' takes place. It is the result of consistently enduring the process. Instead of being a foreign image, one transforms into a role model – the seemingly unattainable figure that has succeeded. The once 'strange' bird has become an angelic luminous being. The coat of arms symbolizes outwardly what is believed or lived internally. It stands for a maturation: A person, a castle, a city has 'earned something' that now appears worthy on a coat of arms.
