Chance and Logic; Fixation of Belief By Charles Sanders Peirce

Описание к видео Chance and Logic; Fixation of Belief By Charles Sanders Peirce

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) was an American philosopher, logician, mathematician and scientist who is sometimes known as "the father of pragmatism." He was widely admired by his contemporaries William James and Josiah Royce and was highly influential on John Dewey and the growing school of philosophical pragmatism. Shunned by many academic institutions during his own day, he continues to be admired by many as one of the most original thinkers produced by 19th century America. Increasingly, his work in logic has become appreciated as formative in the development of computer science as well as highly influential in the fields of business and management.

Peirce argued that the aim of inquiry is the fixation of belief, and that the scientific method is the most effective way of so doing.

The Fixation of Belief is the first of six papers written by Peirce to set out the logic of science; it lays the groundwork for "How to Make Our Ideas Clear."

In the words of Bertrand Russell, "Beyond doubt [Peirce] was one of the most original minds of the later nineteenth century and certainly the greatest American thinker ever."
