Blender Character Modeling 14: Fat Fingers & Shoe Mastery 🐱

We are back at the grind, and today Bizo finally got some hands! I’ll admit, I jumped into this session without checking the tutorial first, relying purely on memory. It led to some "fat finger" moments (literally), but that’s all part of the muscle memory process.

In this session, we tackled the skin modifier limbs for the hands and then moved down to block out some surprisingly complex sneakers.

The Build Session: Extrusions & Shoe Logic
Hand Sculpting (Skin Modifier): I started by extruding the arm point on the X-axis. To get the fingers right, you have to remember that Control + A is the only way to scale the thickness of a Skin Modifier vertex. I extruded four fingers and a thumb, then spent a few minutes fighting the "fatness" until they looked like actual paws instead of, well, balloons.

The "Cheeto" Sneaker Method: For the shoes, we started with a cube and applied a Subdivision Surface (Ctrl + 2). The trick here is using Loop Cuts (Ctrl + R) to flatten the bottom of the shoe and define where the "sock" begins.

Sock & Tongue Detail: This was a great refresher on the Duplicate (Shift + D) and Inset (I) workflow. We duplicated the top faces of the shoe to create a separate mesh for the socks, then used Alt + S (Shrink/Fatten) to give them that cozy, puffed-out look.

Snapping and Creasing: We used Mean Crease (1.0) on the bottom edges of the soles to give the shoes a flat, hard-surface look while keeping the rest of the shoe soft and organic.

Technical Troubleshooting: Mirroring and Merging
I had a weird moment where the shoes were rendering on the wrong side or merging in the middle. Quick reminder to self: Turn off "Merge" on the Mirror Modifier if your character’s feet or hands are supposed to stay separate! Also, keeping the Mirror at the very top of the stack is the golden rule for a reason.

Progress Report
We’re 30 minutes in, and Bizo is looking more complete than ever:

Hands and Fingers are fully rigged with the Skin Modifier.

Sneakers are modeled with soles, tongues, and socks.

Proportions are starting to feel solid from the front and side views.

Next up: The Shorts and Coloring. We’re going to block out the clothing and finally give this cat some color. I’m thinking of leaning more into a "classic cat" style for the next iteration, but for now, Bizo is shaping up to be a legend.
