'Paragraph 7' from Cornelius Cardew’s The Great Learning (1968-71) is scored for 'any number of untrained voices' using only verbal instructions, and is based on the writings of Confucius. Each member of the choir chooses a pitch for the first line of text, and matches a pitch already being sung for each subsequent line. Both the structure of the music, and the music itself, describe a system of organization built upon contingency: each element in a group is ordered through its influences and dependencies upon other elements.
