In this video I tie a square lashing, securing a bamboo pole to a tree.

The square lashing can be a little more intimidating that the other knots we've practiced, but it is simple enough that most people can catch on quickly.

What's cool about this knot is that it combines some other knots into itself, making what we can consider a compound-knot (these being the clove hitch, timber hitch, and a second clove hitch).

Using the square lashing, you can make crosses or make a rectangular frame, which can be the foundation for your tarp, tent, or even a raft!

Get some rope and practice a square lashing!
