This Opera Australia production of 'Patience', by Gilbert & Sullivan, was recorded live at the Sydney Opera House, February 28, 1995. Patience was the sixth collaboration between Gilbert and Sullivan. It opened at the Opera Comique, London, on April 23, 1881. In October of that year, it moved to the Savoy Theater, where it was the first theatrical production ever to be lit entirely by electric light. From then on, the G&S operettas would be known as the 'Savoy Operas', and both fans and performers of Gilbert and Sullivan would come to be known as "Savoyards".
'Patience' satirizes the 'aesthetic movement' of the 1870s and '80s in England.
